Improving Employee Retention In Your Flexible Workforce

Employee retention, it’s a hot topic! And it’s no surprise.  According to a report by HR Today, every employee who voluntarily leaves your business costs around 15% of the annual salary.
But the reports you read are mainly focusing around permanent staff members. And whilst this is in no doubt important to your business, what about your flexible workforce? How can you improve employee retention when it comes to your temporary workforce? And more importantly, why does this really matter?  What other benefits can you expect to see as a result of this improved retention?

Here’s why some temporary workers move on quickly –

When it comes to managing your flexible workforce, it can be just as disappointing to lose a talented temp as it can be to lose a permanent member of staff. But the main reasons a temporary worker goes else where can usually be split into the following –

They don’t feel like they are part of the team

As much as you can, include your flexible workforce in team activities, whether fun or more corporate. Make them feel like they belong. After all, the work of a temp is just as important as that of your permanent team. And whilst a temp is replaceable, wouldn’t it be easier if you had the same, trustworthy individual with you each day. Someone who can grown and learn with you. Not all temps want to be on short term assignments. In fact, in a recent study, we found that over 80% of temps would rather be on long-term assignments.  So why go through the pain of retraining when you can retain instead.

There’s no real motivation to return day after day – the problem with employee retention in a flexible workforce

Each and every day, we all make a choice to go to work (or work from home as it may well be for some right now). Temps make that choice too. But they also have the added question of if there’s a better opportunity for them to make a move to. Maybe it’s for a little more pay. Maybe a longer term assignment, or maybe the offer with your competitor is just more compelling? But, if you look after your flexible workforce and give them genuine reason to return each day, you’ll reap the rewards.  Keep reading for a really simple solution to this problem.

You don’t find out what they want

Don’t assume that temps are working to simply earn a wage. This isn’t always the case. Yes, we appreciate that some assignments are short term and this works for some. Whether it’s a holiday from uni, or a stop gap whilst searching for a permanent opportunity. There are many reasons why people choose to temp. But what about the temps who are looking for something more long term, something to learn or ways to develop? There are many people out there who are looking for something more than just a job.
