International Students – Work in the UK Whilst Studying

International students – we can give you the opportunity to work and earn extra money to supplement your student loans. We understand that studying and living in the UK can be expensive. Whilst you may not need to work to fund your studies, we know that lots of students are interested in working to pay for their living expenses and to meet new people.

Despite the recent changes to immigration laws, international students can still work in the UK.

Here’s our guide on what you need to know – Firstly, you need to ensure that you are aware of your university rules on working as an international student. But once you’ve checked that out you should be able to get to work almost immediately.

What you’ll need before you can work as an international student

Non-EU students – you will need to have a student visa. You will need to have a biometric residence permit and a letter from your university confirming term dates.

EU Students – you will need to have a share code to prove your EU Settlement Status. You can get your code here. If you are an EU student, the rules on working hours don’t apply. You can work as many hours as you like.

How many hours a week can international students work?

If you are currently on a student visa for studying a full-time degree, you can work a maximum of 20 hours a week during term-time. A week runs for 7 days from Monday. So, you can work a few hours a day or even 2 days of 10 hour shifts. There are no rules to how your 20 hours are spent. However, it’s important that you don’t exceed those hours. This applies to paid and unpaid work.

But it’s not just part time work you can do. You are able, in most circumstances, to work full time during official vacation periods. Just be sure to check with the university before undertaking any full-time work. It’s a great way to top up your bank account before the start of term.

How much does a part time job pay?

Companies can choose the pay rates for particular jobs. However, at CSP, we pay a minimum of £8.91 per hour. In fact, all our jobs have a pay rate of £8.91 – £11.50.

How international students can get part-time jobs

So, you’ve decided that working whilst studying is something you’re interested in. What next? How do you find a job that’s right for you?

Here at CSP, we have been helping students find suitable work for many years. Our work is flexible and can fit easily into your schedule. So whether you are looking for work for a few weeks, or a few months, we will have the perfect job. You can work more hours during holidays and less hours, or none at all, during exam times. The beauty of agency work as an international student is that you can choose what’s best for you whilst still putting your studies first.

Working after your studies

After your course has ended, and whilst your visa is still valid, you are able to work full-time. You may, at that point want to consider changing to a graduate visa.
